The Bravest Army Cat

Skittish, shy, and perennially lackadaisical, cats don’t seem particularly suited for warfare. Although, not in any official capacities like horses, dogs, or mules, cats were often welcomed aboard ships to help with rodent control and similarly in barracks and military field offices. A good ratter could help preserve often precious food stores, help prevent the spread of diseases, and keep rats or mice from chewing through ropes and wiring. However, many of us will be most familiar with cats that served as mascots and companions. Cats were also believed by many seamen to possess “miraculous weather-detecting powers:” If a cat licked its fur, it supposedly indicated a hail storm; a sneeze meant rain, and “friskiness” was an omen of high winds. Often they were adopted along the way by soldiers and sailors who found an abandoned cat or kitten, providing stress relief and a bit of fun in tense situations. During World War 1, the British army employed nearly 500000 of the felines to fend off unwanted critters on land and at sea; nearly every World War 2 vessel had at least one aboard at all times. But in this boundless expanse of cats, one stood out for his outstanding valor. His efforts for Britain’s Royal Navy — first surviving a brutal attack that killed his caretaker, then proceeding to annihilate rats and raise the morale of his crew — made him a national hero and earned him the prestigious Dickin Medal. To this day, he is the only cat to ever receive the award. This is the story of Simon — the most decorated cat in military history.
