The adrenal glands are two small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of each of your kidneys. They are part of your endocrine system, which is a network of glands that produce hormones that travel through your bloodstream and regulate many important body functions.

The adrenal glands have two main parts:

The outer layer, called the adrenal cortex, produces steroid hormones, including cortisol, aldosterone, and sex hormones.
The inner core, called the adrenal medulla, produces hormones called epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline).
Functions of the Adrenal Glands

The adrenal glands play an important role in many bodily functions, including:

Metabolism: The adrenal cortex produces cortisol, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, helps the body use carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and reduces inflammation.

Blood pressure regulation: The adrenal cortex also produces aldosterone, which helps regulate blood pressure and blood volume by controlling the balance of salt and water in the body.

Stress response: The adrenal medulla produces epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline), which are hormones that help the body respond to stress. When you experience stress, your adrenal glands release these hormones, which increase your heart rate, breathing rate, and blood sugar levels. This prepares your body to take action in a stressful situation.

Sexual function: The adrenal cortex also produces small amounts of sex hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, in both men and women. These hormones play a role in sexual development and function.

What it Means to Have Balanced Adrenals

Having balanced adrenals means that your adrenal glands are producing the right amount of hormones to keep your body functioning properly. When your adrenal glands are balanced, you may have:

Normal energy levels
A healthy metabolism
A good ability to handle stress
Normal blood pressure
Healthy sleep patterns

When your adrenal glands are not balanced, you may experience a variety of symptoms, depending on which hormones are being produced in excess or not enough. Some common symptoms of adrenal imbalance include:

Fatigue
Difficulty sleeping
Weight gain or loss
Irritability
Anxiety
Difficulty concentrating
Muscle weakness
Changes in mood
Skin problems
