Acts - Chapter 16 Summary:

Acts chapter 16 narrates Paul's second missionary journey, including his partnership with Silas, the recruitment of Timothy, and significant events in Philippi. Paul and Silas travel through the regions of Phrygia and Galatia, directed by the Holy Spirit to preach in specific areas. In Lystra, they meet Timothy, a young disciple with a good reputation, who joins them after being circumcised to respect Jewish customs. Guided by a vision, Paul and his companions journey to Macedonia, specifically to the city of Philippi. There, they convert Lydia, a wealthy merchant, after a riverside prayer meeting. Paul exorcises a fortune-telling spirit from a slave girl, which leads to their arrest as her owners lose their income. Beaten and imprisoned, Paul and Silas sing hymns at midnight, when an earthquake opens the prison doors. The jailer, fearing the prisoners have escaped, is about to kill himself, but Paul reassures him. The jailer and his household convert to Christianity and are baptized. The next day, the magistrates order Paul and Silas's release, but Paul insists on a public apology because they were beaten as Roman citizens without a trial. The magistrates comply, and Paul and Silas leave the city, encouraging the new believers before their departure.
