Acts - Chapter 15 Summary:

Acts chapter 15 describes the Jerusalem Council, which addresses the critical issue of whether Gentile converts must follow the Mosaic law, particularly circumcision, to be saved. Some believers from Judea insist that Gentile Christians must be circumcised according to the custom of Moses. Paul and Barnabas strongly disagree, and the matter is brought to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. After much debate, Peter speaks about how God chose him to bring the gospel to the Gentiles and how they received the Holy Spirit just as the Jews did, without the burden of the law. James supports Peter, citing prophecy and recommending that Gentiles should not be burdened with the law but should abstain from certain practices associated with idolatry and immorality. The council agrees and sends a letter with these instructions to the Gentile believers in Antioch, delivered by Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas. The letter brings great encouragement to the Gentile Christians. Paul and Barnabas continue their ministry, but a disagreement over John Mark causes them to part ways; Barnabas takes Mark to Cyprus, and Paul chooses Silas to accompany him through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
