Some African Union peacekeepers are set to withdraw from Somalia, with 2,000 troops expected to leave, half the original number planned. The withdrawal has been slowed following a Somali government request amid concerns over Al-Shabaab's resurgence. The peacekeeping mission is to withdraw completely by December, but the African Union aims to establish a new 12,000-strong contingent to replace it. Mohammed Hirmoge, a Somalia affairs analyst and former communications staffer at the office of the country's president, told Al Jazeera that the AU's 17-year peacekeeping mission has achieved little, despite the money and time allocated, as much of the country remains under insurgent control.
