How to tell the difference between Ego and Unconditional Love?

How do we know if it is our ego that drives us to do what we do? How can we see / feel / notice the difference when we act from our authentic, selfless and loving self and the Ego? Can the ego fulfill a good function for us? Make us strive for something? Can we find a good balance?
