Scientists discover perfectly preserved 44,000-year-old Siberian wolf

A surprisingly well preserved, surprisingly ancient wolf has been found in the permafrost of Siberia, with even the contents of its stomach still intact. The wolf was first discovered in 2021, 40 meters underground near the Tirekhtyakh River in Yakutia, and later confirmed by scientists to be over 44,000 years old. A painstaking preservation effort has seen the wolf transferred to the Mammoth Museum Laboratory of the Northeast Federal University in Yakutsk, where researchers have performed an autopsy, the only one to have ever been performed on a wolf this old.
