The most common German anti-tank gun of World War II was the 5 cm Pak 38. It was a 50 mm caliber anti-tank gun used by the German Wehrmacht during the early and middle stages of the war. The Pak 38 was designed in the late 1930s and was widely used by German forces in various theaters of the war. It was an effective weapon against Allied tanks early in the conflict, but as Allied tank armor improved, the Pak 38 became less effective and was eventually replaced by larger caliber guns such as the 7.5 cm Pak 40.
