Sport Goofy was a marketing theme for Goofy tying in with the 1982 Summer Olympics Games. During the golden age of animation, Goofy had appeared in dozens of shorts about various types of sporting events. In many of these shorts, Goofy is mute or uses library audio because Goofy's voice, Pinto Colvig, had left the Walt Disney Studios.

This song was written by Dale Gonyea and was released as a single album tying in with the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. It is performed by Lara Mumford. The song was later released a year later on the LP album Mickey Mouse Splashdance but this music video was produced also tying in with the Olympic Games. It also aired on the Disney Channel along with other music videos developed around the songs from the Splashdance album. Character albums were commonplace for Walt Disney Productions going back to its founding.

In 1987 a TV special centering around Sport Goofy aired on NBC. Sport Goofy in Soccermania was the first time comic book characters like the Beagle Boys, Gladstone Gander, Gyro Gearloose, and others were ever seen in animation. Soccermania was meant to be the first in a series but was the only Sport Goofy special ever made. It was produced by a who's who of animation of the time who'd go on to great successes in the years to come. This Sport Goofy music video was part of that broadcast.

Sport Goofy also enjoyed a lengthy print media run as well as being used in merchandising. He also had his own store at Walt Disney World.
