“The Callisto Protocol” is a survival horror game developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton, released on December 2, 20221. Directed by Glen Schofield, the creator of the Dead Space series, the game is considered a spiritual successor to that series.

Description: The game is set in the year 2320 and follows the protagonist, Jacob Lee, a starship captain who survives a crash landing on Jupiter’s moon Callisto. He finds himself captured and incarcerated in the high-security Black Iron Prison against his will. As a mysterious illness sweeps through the prison, Jacob is forced to fight for survival while uncovering the dark secrets of his captors.

Gameplay: Players control Jacob from a third-person perspective, navigating through levels, gathering resources, and fighting off infected prisoners. The combat system allows for a mix of weapon use and melee attacks, providing variety in enemy encounters. Health is indicated by a “C.O.R.E. Device” implanted in Jacob’s neck, which can be replenished with injectable packs found throughout the game.

Plot Summary: Jacob Lee and his first mate, Max Barrow, are contract freight transporters for the United Jupiter Company. After deciding to retire following one last shipment, their ship, the Charon, is boarded by the Outer Way, a terrorist group. The ship crash-lands back on Callisto, leading to Max’s death and leaving Jacob and Outer Way leader Dani Nakamura as the only survivors. Jacob is then taken to Black Iron Prison, where he becomes inmate 532-521 and must navigate the chaos of the prison outbreak to escape.

The game received mixed reviews and did not meet the sales expectations of its publisher, but it has been praised for its atmospheric setting and horror elements.
