We speak to Martin Venter. He started his army life with the Technical Service Corps (basics) and then to 3 SAI from where he and a few mates left to join the Rhodesian Light Infantry up north. After completing a parachute course in Bloemfontein, he was recognised as a South African Army “deserter” and sent back to South Africa where the Military Police waited. After a military trial and being sentenced to the DB for 21 days (suspended for two years) he found himself at 32 Battalion. Within days he was involved in the Battle of Eheke (Operation Kropduif) where Recce’s lost 7 men
(the most in one battle in their illustrious history). 32 Bn also had losses as well as the other units involved. Martin further explains that the Parabats never rescued 32 BN despite the rumours to the contrary, and much more. It is a fascinating story not to be missed.
