Police in Ohio beat unarmed black man
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – A violent confrontation between local police and two African American families in Chillicothe has reignited the debate over police reform. The incident, which involved multiple arrests, was first reported by The Guardian and has since drawn widespread attention and condemnation.
The individuals arrested during the altercation include OJ Tyrone Netter, Quinlan Netter, James Wingo, and Jayce Wingo. Each faces serious charges and court proceedings in the coming weeks. OJ Tyrone Netter, Quinlan Netter, and James Wingo are all set for pre-trial on June 28, 2024, facing charges of obstruction and resisting arrest. Jayce Wingo, who faces more severe charges of felony strangulation and felony assault on a police officer, has a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 21, 2024.
Jayce Wingo was severely injured during the incident, requiring immediate medical attention. He was first taken to Adena Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Grant Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center. His family reports that Wingo continues to suffer from medical issues as a result of the police encounter.
The Chillicothe Police Department has defended its actions, claiming the citizens were the aggressors, necessitating a forceful response. However, body cam footage released from the scene paints a troubling picture. Officer Jeremy Conley can be seen aggressively confronting a bystander, slapping his gun and saying, "Yeah, my gun is right here," when asked if he was going to shoot someone. Conley is also seen striking Jayce Wingo in the head multiple times while Wingo lay on the curb with five officers restraining him.
This footage has sparked intense scrutiny of the department’s handling of the situation. Human Rights consultants and legal experts have criticized the approach taken by the officers, suggesting that less confrontational methods should have been employed. "This should have been treated like a riot," one expert noted, recommending the use of shields and a larger law enforcement presence to direct the crowd back to private property instead of engaging in physical altercations.
The Guardian continues to investigate the officers involved, examining their past disciplinary records. The body cam video has been widely circulated across Ohio, prompting a significant public outcry. Citizens have taken to social media to protest the police's actions.
