Bingen am Rhein is a large town in the district of Mainz-Bingen in Rhineland-Palatinate. The original name of the settlement was Bingium, a Celtic word possibly meaning "hole in the rock", the name for the shallow area behind the Mäuseturm, known as the Binger Loch. Bingen was the starting point of the Ausoniusstraße, a Roman military road that connected the city with Trier. Bingen is also famous for the story of the Bingen Mouse Tower, in which Archbishop Hatto of Mainz was allegedly eaten by mice. In 2008, Bingen hosted the third Rhineland-Palatinate State Garden Show after Kaiserslautern and Trier. Residents of Bingen are called "Binger", but the word "Bingener" is frowned upon.
