HARNWELL: Political earthquake rocks Germany as its “next chancellor” says Ukraine should make peace

VIDEO SYNTHESIS / Many analysts predict Friedrich Merz will be Germany’s next chancellor. After spending the last two years criticising Olaf Scholz for not doing enough to help Ukraine, the leader of the opposition just performed a huge U-turn, now saying Ukraine should seek peace with Russia!

I reported last week on the widespread jeering that was directed at Rod Stewart for showing an image of Zelensky at a Berlin concert. Perhaps Merz also saw this — and has taken note.

This switch now suggests both Germany and France — between them the EU’s political motor — will be pushing for peace with Russia by 2025.
