"Human beings are compelled to create..." Vertical has unveiled an official trailer for the film titled Widow Clicquot, a US project even though it's about a French woman and the art of making champagne in France. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also played at the 2024 Sonoma Film Festival earlier this year, because of course a wine movie played there. The film tells the story behind the Veuve Clicquot champagne family and business that began in the late 18th century, focusing on Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, known as the "Grande Dame of Champagne." Haley Bennett stars as Barbe-Nicole, who married into a winemaking family and became Madame Clicquot and took over the fledgling business when she became a widow at age 27. Under her (controversial) ownership, and her skill with wine, the company developed early champagne using a novel technique called riddling. The film focuses on her relationships in addition to her winemaking skills and legacy crafting French champagne. Along with Bennett, this also stars Tom Sturridge, Sam Riley, Anson Boon, Leo Suter, Paul Rhys, Natasha O’Keeffe, & Ben Miles. I usually enjoy most stories about wine and its history! This looks passionate & beautiful - I'm down to watch.

Widow Clicquot is based on the true story of the woman known as the "Grande Dame of Champagne," Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (1777–1866) who, at the age of 20, became Madame Clicquot after marrying the scion of a winemaking family. Though their marriage was arranged, a timeless love blossomed between Barbe-Nicole (Haley Bennett) and her unconventional, erratic husband, François (Tom Sturridge). After her husband's untimely death, Barbe-Nicole flouts convention by assuming the reins of the fledgling wine business they'd nurtured together. Steering the company through dizzying political & financial reversals, she defies her critics and revolutionizes the champagne industry to become one of the world's first great entrepreneurs. Widow Clicquot is directed by filmmaker Thomas Napper, making his second feature film after directing Jawbone previously, and working as second unit director on Joe Wright's movies for years. The screenplay is written by Erin Dignam. Based on Tilar J. Mazzeo's book "The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It." Produced by Haley Bennett, Joe Wright, Christina Weiss Lurie. Vertical debuts Napper's Widow Clicquot in select US theaters on July 19th, 2024. Who's in?
