Wat Thep Phithak Punnaram is a temple that enshrines the Buddha image named Sakolsima Mongkhon. It was named by the late Thai king Bhumibol Adulyadej who was known also as king Rama IX.

People ususally call the Buddha image as Luang Pho Khao or Luang Pho Yai. The Buddha image is a giant white statue in the attitude of blessing that is made of reinforced concrete.

It is located half way up a mountain that is 112 meters high above the ground level or 56 Wa. The height is referring to the 56 virtues of the Buddha. Also, the height of 45 meters refers to the 45 years of teaching animals or performing Buddha activities.

There are 1,260 steps that refer to the number of Buddhist saints who gathered without an appointment on Makha Bucha Day.

Wat Thep Phithak Punnaram or Wat Phra Khao is located at Khao Siat Ah, Ban Klang Dong, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima. It’s just north of Saraburi and on the east side of the road as you’re traveling away from Bangkok to the north. The image stands out on the mountain side and easy to find.

The temple is set in a rural setting and is well maintained. The climb to the Buddha image gives you a nice view of the surrounding countryside. It’s a small temple but enjoyable to visit.
