Trump's Gag Order Lifted: Impact on Upcoming Debate

The lifting of parts of the gag order on former President Donald Trump allows him to publicly comment on witnesses and jurors in his hush money criminal trial. This includes discussing individuals like Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels who testified against him during the trial. However, the gag order still prevents Trump from making statements about the judge overseeing the case, the judge's family, and the prosecutors involved.

The decision by Judge Juan Merchan, which was made just two days before Trump is set to debate President Joe Biden, allows Trump to speak freely about those who testified against him. This is significant because Trump has been vocal in his criticism of the witnesses, particularly Cohen, whom he has called a liar and a fraud.

The gag order was initially imposed to protect the integrity of the judicial proceedings and prevent Trump from influencing or intimidating the witnesses and jurors. With the trial concluded and the jury discharged, the judge deemed it appropriate to lift these restrictions. However, the judge left in place the ban on Trump commenting about court staffers, the prosecution team, and their families until he is sentenced on July 11.

Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, criticized the judge's decision, calling it "unconstitutional," and vowed to challenge it. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office, on the other hand, had asked the judge to keep the gag order in place to protect the jurors and court staff from potential threats or harassment.
