Kenya’s capital Nairobi was the scene of tense clashes on Tuesday, as thousands of protesters gathered to rally against the government’s new tax proposals, which would see the price of many necessities increase.
The protests saw Nairobi’s central business district brought to a standstill, while a group of demonstrators managed to break into the country’s parliament complex, starting a fire on the grounds. Local media reports that the MPs inside were forced to take cover in the basement.
In an attempt to disperse the crowds, Kenyan riot police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and even live ammunition. Several protesters have been wounded, according to reports, while Auma Obama, half-sister of former US President Barack Obama, was among those hit with tear gas, the aftermath of which was filmed by CNN.
