Bioluminescence is caused by small organisms that emit light in the ocean. During the day, the organisms turn the water into a murky brown shade also known as "red tide" but at night, they turn the ocean bright blue when the water gets disturbed by a breaking wave or a boat for example. "That flash of light for each individual cell is not very bright, but when there's a lot of them in the water, that's when they really can light the waves up and lead to quite bright glowing," said associate professor at UCSD Dr. Drew Lucas.
