Posted • June 25, 2024: A Wild Occurence In Which Bioluminescence Washes Up In The Ocean, Lighting Up The Water Florescent Blue Is Happening In California 一 Bioluminescence was spotted over the past month in Southern California as waves light up bright blue. Bioluminescence is caused by small organisms that emit light in the ocean. During the day, the organisms turn the water into a murky brown shade also known as "red tide" but at night, they turn the ocean bright blue when the water gets disturbed by a breaking wave or a boat for example. "That flash of light for each individual cell is not very bright, but when there's a lot of them in the water, that's when they really can light the waves up and lead to quite bright glowing," said associate professor at UCSD Dr. Drew Lucas.
