VIPER Moon Rover

The VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover) is a robotic lunar rover developed by NASA to explore the Moon’s south polar region. It is scheduled to launch in late 2024 and land on the Moon in 2024.

VIPER is a critical part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and establish a sustainable presence there. The rover will be the first to explore the Moon’s south polar region, which is believed to contain vast deposits of water ice. This water ice could be a valuable resource for future lunar missions, providing drinking water, breathable air, and rocket fuel.

VIPER’s mission is to:

Map the distribution of water ice and other volatiles on the lunar surface.
Characterize the physical and chemical properties of these resources.
Assess the potential for using these resources to support future lunar missions.

VIPER is a small, four-wheeled rover equipped with a suite of scientific instruments, including:

A neutron spectrometer to detect water ice.
A mass spectrometer to identify and quantify other volatiles.
A ground-penetrating radar to map the subsurface.
A visible and near-infrared spectrometer to study the surface composition.
A laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy instrument to analyze the composition of rocks and soil.

VIPER will be powered by solar panels and will operate for 100 Earth days. It will be controlled remotely from Earth.
