“Swab to grain”: one of the easiest methods on how to grow mushrooms from spores. No pressure cooker and no agar necessary. This video is Pt. 2 and the conclusion of my two month long experiment.

This video is meant to inspire new ideas about how to germinate spores. I thought to research and develop this swab-to-grain method in hopes that it could be a new agar-free way to germinate grain loving mushroom spores from spore prints. So far I have been pleasantly surprised.

📝 What you need for this tek:

🍄 Mushroom spore print
🍚 90 second rice (whole grain brown)
🖌️ Sterile swabs
✂️ Scissors
🔥 Lighter (for flame sterilizing the scissors)
🚿 70% alcohol (alcohol is flammable, keep away from fire)
🩹 Micropore tape
⚗️ Large ziplock bags
🌰 Coco coir
🧤 gloves

This video presents a very easy and relatively fast way to continuously grow mushrooms at home. This is one of the easiest teks out there, no pressure cooker or agar necessary.

Some important points to reiterate:

• This method will be probably not be as successful as you see in this video unless you use a spore print that is as clean as humanly possible.
• Make sure your techniques are as sterile as possible when inoculating and spawning the rice bags. Going from spore straight to grain is known to result in a greater chance of contamination. I don’t have the best set up but I make do with a BBFFU and a clean (clean with ISO) bathroom surface after running the shower on HOT for 5-10 minutes, turning off the AC, and spraying everything with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
• when you gather spores you mush “spin” the swab on a *single point* on the spore print, DO NOT DRAG THE SWAB ACROSS THE PRINT. Spinning the swab while it’s stationary allows for fewer spores to be picked up and therefore a lower chance of contamination.
• push the swab through the rice cake until you can see the swab tip through the view window on the bottom of the bag.

If you have a relatively clean spore print, and you use a strict and effective sterile technique, then you’ll have a better chance of getting clean grain spawn and a clean mushroom flush.
