Altaba Inc. was an American investment company that held shares in Alibaba and Yahoo! Japan, among others. The company was founded as an Internet company by David Filo and Jerry Yang in January 1994 under the name YahooIn 1996, Yahoo went public with 46 employees. In 2009, a total of around 13,500 employees worked for Yahoo.

The company, Yahoo Inc., renamed itself Altaba Inc. in 2017 after selling its portal business to Verizon, focusing on its two main holdings in Alibaba Group and Yahoo! Japan. In September 2018, the company sold its shares in Yahoo! Japan to the Japanese technology group SoftbankIn June 2019, Altaba decided to sell its Alibaba shares and dissolve its own company, which was finalized on January 21, 2020. The web portal Yahoo has been a member of the Verizon group of companies since 2016, where it became part of Oath (since 2019: Verizon Media) in 2017. In May 2021, investment firm Apollo Global Management bought Yahoo and AOL from Verizon.In the summer of 2013, whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) had approached email providers to request customers' communication data on a large scale. Yahoo, like other providers, has published transparency reports in the wake of the debate about this data protection scandal. In the first half of 2013, the U.S. authorities collected the most data from Yahoo customers in the U.S. (12,444 requests), followed by Germany (4,295) and Italy, Taiwan, France and the United Kingdom.

Further documents show that the British secret service GCHQ monitored Yahoo video chats for years as part of the "Optic Nerve" program.In 2017, Yahoo announced the extent of a new attack method based on the 2014 hack. Attackers are said to have first carried out the hack in 2014 by falsifying usercookies and then accessed 32 million user accounts in 2015 and 2016, even without knowing the password. According to Yahoo, these attacks were carried out by the same state entity that carried out the attack in 2014.

The disclosure of the hacks led to many class action lawsuits against Yahoo and the reduction of the purchase price in negotiations with AOL.
