More than 70 million Americans - about one in five ofthe population - are living under heat alerts as temperatures soar.
Authorities are concerned for vulnerable people inConnecticut, New Jersey and New York, as the statesare not accustomed to this level of heat.
Cooling centers have opened up in cities across thenorth-east part of America, with officials sayingtemperatures could top 100F (38C).
Scientists say extreme weather events are becomingmore frequent and intense as a result of climate change.
