Protesters have taken to the streets in Nairobi, Kenya,to challenge the government over a series ofunpopular tax proposals - including a 16% levy on bread.

On Tuesday, hundreds of protestors - most of themyounger people - braved tear gas lobbed by police tomarch through the capital, Nairobi, bringing the city'scentral business district to a standstill.

The government had earlier defended the tax hikes, which had been projected to raise $2.7bn (£2.1bn),saying they were needed to cut reliance on external borrowing.
