1.4 million km cables drew a US-China undersea tech war

As the West increases decoupling and de risking from China, an undersea tech war has intensified. Submarine optical fiber cables are the artery of the internet and subject to sabotage and unrestricted warfare. They have also become a hot geopolitical battlefield as China challenges American dominance undersea. China’s HMN Tech, a Huawei affiliate, has become one of the largest submarine cable companies. It led the world in the number of delivered submarine cables from 2018-2022 with a 23% market share.
