Vancouver, Washington, USA — On June 8, 2024, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Vancouver Police were dispatched to the 100 block of SE Columbia Way regarding a male, later identified as 43-year-old Vadim Sashchenko, who had an aggressive German Shepard that was reported to be running loose and had bitten at least one person. Sashchenko was also described as having a firearm. At approximately, 2:59 p.m., two Vancouver Police Officers locate Sashchenko and his dog in the area of Columbia Street/Columbia Way. One officer approached from the north; the other officer approached from the south.

As Sashchenko walked northbound on the sidewalk across from one of the arriving officer's patrol vehicle, he displayed what appeared to be a gun and pointed it at the officer. The officer discharged his gun, striking Sashchenko. As the officers approached Sashchenko to provide medical aid, the dog was behaving aggressively and trying to bite them. The officers used a foam baton round to get the dog to move away before trying to provide medical aid to Sashchenko. Sashchenko died at the scene. The dog was later transported to the Humane Society. No law enforcement officers or bystanders were physically injured.
