The Goldeneye is a medium-sized duck found across northern parts of Europe, Asia and North America. The males are striking, with a dark green head, white cheek patch and golden eye. Females are browner with also having the golden eye. They nest in tree cavities near lakes and rivers, with the female laying around 9 eggs. After hatching, the ducklings remarkably leap from the nest and make their way to water. Goldeneyes dive for food like molluscs, crustaceans and plants. In winter, they often gather in big flocks on sheltered coasts and estuaries. Though their numbers declined due to hunting and pollution, Goldeneye populations have recovered well in many areas.
