Hundreds of Pilgrims Die on Hajj as Heatwave Grips Mecca

More than 550 visitors have died during the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia's Mecca due to extreme heat. 68 Indians are among the casualties. For the past few years, the pilgrimage has fallen during the sweltering summer in Saudi Arabia. A 2019 study by Geophysical Research Letters said that as temperatures rise in arid Saudi Arabia due to climate change, pilgrims performing Hajj will face "extreme danger".
