Mérida is located less than 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the northeastern part of the state of Yucatán. It borders to the east with Quintana Roo, to the west with Campeche and to the north with the Gulf of Mexico. Yucatán has a very flat topography and is located very close to sea level.
A little history: In 1542 the Spanish conquerors found the Mayan site called “T'Hó” which means “place of the five hills”. There they discovered a settlement that reminded them of the vestiges of Mérida, in Extremadura, Spain. They renamed the city and used the stones from the temples for the construction of the cathedral, government buildings and the homes of the conquerors.
Currently, Mérida is the economic, cultural and service capital of the Mexican southeast. It is a cosmopolitan destination with easy access connected by air, sea and land with the world thanks to a privileged geographical location. It is a place that enjoys true originality, an expressive richness with universal value and reach. In 2019, the city was designated a Creative Gastronomic City by UNESCO.
