A neutron star is a type of stellar remnant that results from the gravitational collapse of a massive star after a supernova explosion. These stars are incredibly dense, with a mass between 1.4 and 2.16 times that of the Sun but compressed into a sphere with a radius of only about 10 kilometers (6 miles). The density of a neutron star is so extreme that a sugar-cube-sized amount of neutron-star material would weigh about a billion tons on Earth.Neutron stars possess intense magnetic fields and can rotate at incredibly high speeds, with some spinning hundreds of times per second. These rapidly rotating neutron stars are known as pulsars and emit beams of electromagnetic radiation that can be detected as regular pulses when they sweep past Earth. Neutron stars are composed almost entirely of neutrons, subatomic particles with no electric charge, packed together in a way that defies the normal structure of matter. The study of neutron stars provides valuable insights into the fundamental properties of matter under extreme conditions.
