At UFC 47 on April 2, 2004, a young Nick Diaz faced the heavy-hitting Robbie Lawler in a welterweight bout. Diaz, just 20 years old at the time, was a moderate underdog against the favored Lawler. Despite his youth and less experience, Diaz embraced his unorthodox style, constantly pressuring and taunting his opponent.

Lawler, known for his knockout power and aggression, was a heavy favorite coming into the fight. The 22-year-old had already finished most of his wins by knockout, including former UFC fighters Tiki Ghosn and Chris Lytle. In contrast, Diaz had only a handful of fights on his record, though he had captured the vacant IFC welterweight title early in his career.
