Many years have passed since Kratos took his vengeance against the Olympian pantheon. Having survived his encounter with the Greek gods, Kratos has left Greece behind and now lives in the dangerous but breath-taking world of the Norse Lands. With gritty forests, mountains, and caves of pre-Viking Norse lore, this is a distinctly new realm with its own creatures, monsters, and Pantheon of Gods. Kratos has now become a father again to a boy named Atreus, and in this harsh, unforgiving world, Kratos must not only fight to survive but also teach his son to do the same while preventing Atreus from repeating his bloodstained mistakes. While embracing his newfound role as a single father, protector, and mentor, Kratos is forced to deal with, control, and master the rage that has driven him for many years, which has brought down an entire Patheon of Gods, before it alienates his son, who is determined to earn his father’s respect but keeps coming up short. On one front, Kratos must deal with teaching Atreus how to survive in the world while also contending with the Norse Pantheon themselves on the other front, as the Norse Gods are taking precautions against him due to his reputation as the Patheon Killer. Over the course of their time together, Atreus learns more about his father's complicated and shady past while struggling with the decision of whether to be like his father or choose to be his own person, allowing for a powerful and moving narrative.

The brutal combat system in God of War with an over-the-shoulder-free camera that brings the combat closer to the action mirrors the nature of the Norse Lands: grand, gritty, and grueling. Kratos has access to a new main weapon: the Leviathan Axe, which is a versatile weapon that can be thrown and recalled at will, dealing frost damage and stunning enemies. The axe can be upgraded and customized with different skills and runic attacks, which unlock more powerful abilities that can be activated in combat. Kratos also has access to a new off-hand shield, the Gradian, which can be used to block and parry melee attacks and deflect projectiles. Finally, Kratos can still tap into his signature all-consuming anger, the Spartan Rage, which allows him to enhance his strength and speed, making him deal massive damage while giving him immunity against incoming damage and interruptions.

Atreus can assist Kratos in combat with his bow and arrow to shoot at any enemy that he is targeting or enemies that are out of reach. Atreus can perform special attacks with his runic summons and can distract or stun enemies, giving Kratos opportunities to attack, evade, or retreat. Atreus assistance isn’t limited to combat alone; he can also help Kratos when it comes to exploring the world. Atreus can read and translate runes, providing clues and lore, hints for puzzles and secrets, and activating mechanisms and doors. Atreus can interact with the environment by finding and collecting resources and pointing out hidden collectibles. Atreus can climb, crawl, or squeeze through places that Kratos cannot, allowing access to new areas or items and using his bow to shoot objects that are out of reach. Atreus can also communicate with other characters, acting as a mediator, translator, or negotiator, depending on the situation, while learning more about the world and its history and sharing this knowledge with his father Kratos.

God of War features a variety of enemies from Norse mythology, such as: Draugr: Undead warriors that come in different types and wield various weapons. Trolls are giant creatures that use massive clubs or stones to smash their foes. Ogres: Brutish monsters that charge at Kratos and Atreus with their horns and fists. Revenants are corrupted witches that use poison and magic to attack from a distance. They can teleport and become invisible, making them hard to hit. Ancients: living rock creatures that have elemental cores inside their bodies. Dark Elves: They can fly and use spears, swords, or crossbows to attack, and they can also blind with their flash bombs or summon reinforcements. Hel-Walkers: frozen zombies that can inflict frost damage and slow down Kratos with their attacks, exploding upon death and damaging nearby enemies or allies. Travelers: Mysterious warriors that wear heavy armor and masks that are very tough and resilient while dealing a lot of damage with their swords or maces.

Follow Kratos and Atreus’s as they embark on an adventure that would either bring them closer together than ever before or tear them apart for ever as they try to honor their loving late wife or mother's last wish: for ashes to be scattered to the wind from the highest peak in all the nine realms.
