Old conflicts between Eritrea and Ethiopia resumed in 2009, nearly a year after a war in Russia. Colonel Tesfaye Wolde of the Ethiopian army had engaged in illegal arms sales with Russian ultra-nationalists who were selling arms at inexpensive costs to fund the previous year's coup d'état. Colonel Wolde, armed with a fully restored armory, quickly overthrows the Ethiopian government and seizes the opportunity to recapture Eritrea, which declared independence in 1993. When the violence affects maritime lanes in the Red Sea, it piques worldwide interest. In response to the Eritrean government's request for foreign assistance, the US mobilizes the Ghosts to prevent Colonel Wolde from advancing farther.
The Ghosts arrive in Eritrea, burning an Ethiopian occupation camp on a beach and retaking control of an Eritrean oil facility that the Ethiopian army had occupied. The Ghosts then take over an Ethiopian train depot, acquiring enemy intelligence in the process. After that, they accompany a humanitarian relief convoy. They then drive the Ethiopians out of Eritrea and kidnap one of Wolde's top lieutenants. In a final act of defiance, Wolde leads a tank column across the border to reinvade Eritrea, but is murdered by the Ghosts. The Ethiopian army surrenders to the US military, restoring Ethiopia's legitimate government and liberating Eritrea.
