Project MKUltra was a covert CIA program initiated in the early 1950s aimed at developing mind control techniques. Conducted during the Cold War, the project sought to counter perceived Soviet advances in brainwashing and psychological manipulation. Under the direction of Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, MKUltra involved a wide range of unethical experiments on unwitting subjects, including the administration of drugs like LSD, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, and electroconvulsive therapy.

The program was shrouded in secrecy, with many experiments conducted at universities and hospitals without participants' informed consent. The CIA's actions resulted in severe psychological and physical harm to many individuals. Public awareness of MKUltra emerged in the 1970s through investigations by the Church Committee and revelations during Senate hearings, leading to widespread outrage and calls for greater oversight of intelligence activities. The destruction of many records in 1973 has left significant gaps in the full understanding of the project's scope. MKUltra remains a stark example of the ethical violations and human rights abuses that can occur under the guise of national security.
