China NOW! Huge Tornado Sparks Fires: Dramatic Footage and Aftermath

On June 13th, the northeast of China was hit by a series of powerful storms. The city of Harbin, and the provinces of Heilongjiang and Hebei experienced rare and extreme weather conditions with thunderstorms and strong winds. Among the most dangerous phenomena were at least three tornadoes, one of which was particularly large and destructive.

In Harbin, a tornado swept over power lines, causing wires to snap, resulting in sparks and fires.

Hebei witnessed rare thunderstorms and strong winds. In Daming County, wind speeds reached level 14. It is noteworthy that China uses an extended Beaufort scale, which includes 17 levels to assess wind strength. Wind speeds at level 14 range from 37.0 to 41.4 m/s, equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane.

Wind gusts toppled many trees, causing power outages and damage to buildings. There were interruptions in water and electricity supplies. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.

In Cangzhou, Hebei, an impressive video was captured showing a massive tornado lifting dust in a rural area near a road.

Statistics from the National Climate Center of China for the period from 1991 to 2020 show that tornadoes in the country mostly occur on the eastern plains, with the most dangerous areas being the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. On average, China experiences 38 tornadoes annually.
