The Terrorism Confinement Centre (CECOT) in Tecoluca, El Salvador, has completed an intake of 2,000 new inmates, all suspected gang members. The transfer was announced by President Nayib Bukele, who wrote on X, ‘There they will pay for the crimes committed against our people; incommunicado with the outside, with no possibility of leaving, nor of ordering crimes from prison.’

Bukele also posted a video showing the inmates’ arrival, running barefoot into the facility, dressed only in white shorts, monitored by armed guards.

One of the largest jails in the Americas, The CECOT mega-prison already houses over 14,000 gang members, and has become a symbol of El Salvador’s fight against gang violence. The country currently has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and while Bukele’s crackdown on gang violence has drawn criticism from some human rights groups who cite lack of due process, the homicide rate in the country has plummeted, falling almost 70 percent in 2023.
