Description
The Iranian Oorial (or Urial) mountain sheep, scientifically known as Ovis orientalis, is a majestic wild sheep species found in the rugged heights of the Khorasan region in northeastern Iran. Renowned for their impressive curved horns and robust build, these sheep are adapted to the harsh, rocky terrain of the mountains. They exhibit a striking reddish-brown coat that blends seamlessly with the arid landscape, providing excellent camouflage against predators. The males, distinguished by their large, spiraling horns, can weigh up to 90 kg, while females are generally smaller and have shorter, more slender horns.

Oorial sheep are herbivores, grazing on grasses, herbs, and shrubs that grow in the sparse vegetation of their mountainous habitat. They are social animals, typically forming small herds, but males often become solitary or form bachelor groups outside the breeding season. During the rutting season, males compete fiercely for mating rights, showcasing their strength and dominance through horn clashes and other displays.

These resilient animals play a crucial role in the ecosystem by maintaining vegetation balance and serving as prey for large carnivores. However, they face threats from habitat loss, poaching, and competition with livestock. Conservation efforts are essential to ensure the survival of the Iranian Oorial mountain sheep and the preservation of their natural habitat.
