Ryse: Son of Rome (PC) Gameplay

I picked this game up for $3.49 on a Steam sale. Ryse was a launch game for the Xbox One, and is an underrated action game that has it's own unique combat style, and a short length. On the consoles, it was an Xbox One Exclusive, but was also ported to the PC. I really enjoyed my time with this game. It is definitely one of the best $3.49 Steam purchases I ever made

The biggest caveat to the game is getting it to run smoothly. In fact, I have tried multiple solutions to get it to stay at a consistent 60 frames per second, and the game just isn't optimized well enough for modern hardware. It seems that it ran much better on 2013 PC hardware than it does on modern hardware. My first playthrough, I put on the frame limiter which limited it down to 30 fps for a more consistent feel.

For my next playthrough I used Rivatuner to limit the FPS at 50fps. For some reason, whenever I tried limiting it to 60 FPS, the framerate variances reappeared and it could go from 60 to 30 to anywhere in between at a moment's notice. When I limited it to 50, it was a flat 50 fps.

I have read that if you run EA's origin software in the background, it makes the game run smoother. It sounds crazy, but users on the Steam forums say it works. Maybe there was a specific API with origin the game uses.

Overall, this is a game that I really enjoyed playing through multiple times, but it's a game that is hard to keep at a stable framerate, even on my RX 7900 GRE. It definitely has optimization issues, but I really do like this game.

Note: For this footage, I just put v-sync on to try and lock it at 60fps, however, as you can see, there are portions that have framerate drops. Also, I am playing with an Xbox One controller in this footage.
