The Nazi Madagascar Plan

The failed Nazi plan to send Jews to Madagascar was known as the Madagascar Plan. It was a proposal by by Franz Rademacher, head of the Jewish Department of the German Foreign Office, to relocate the Jewish population of Europe to the island of Madagascar, in June 1940, shortly before the Fall of France.

They intended to move 1 million Jews per year for 4 years. The island would be governed as a police state under the SS, while assuming that many Jews would die in its harsh conditions. The plan was not viable when proposed due to the British naval blockade.

The Nazis lost the Battle of Britain in September 1940. The Plan was permanently shelved in 1942 with the commencement of the Final Solution, the policy of systematic genocide of Jews.
