The modern era has been marked by a consistent drift towards the abyss of abject materialism. While the Old Guard of religious zealots still persists, following humanity around like an unwanted groupie at an after-party, an ever increasing number of people have abandoned Bronze Age, faith based, comic book religions in favor of abject materialism. It didn't take too long for many of these folks to discover that this cosmological outlook was also bogus, unsatisfying, and just as cunducive to evil outcomes as the zombie religions.

Science, despite its best efforts at retaining its converts and to cling to it's moment (an incredibly brief digression, relative to the big picture of history) and maintain this descent into materialist skullduggery, has been forced to watch in horror as many of its leading minds have become something like panpsychists. Terence Mckenna's "Archaic Revival" is seemingly asserting itself beyond the imagination of even most of his most ardent followers. But, it isn't exactly a return to the Old Ways. It can't be.
