This is a story of the Great Dane who always dreamed of being a cattle dog. Eliot was intended to be primarily family pet and, despite his size, he was to live on the farm without being given extraordinary duties, except providing an occasional deep-throated bark to help guard the property against robbers. This did not discourage Eliot from working on fulfilling his lifelong dream. He was always a good dog patiently waiting for his chance. And the chance finally came. The Friesdale horses on the farm always loved to play and splash in the pond. He was observing them from the distance and, although they were having such a good time, he knew he had to pull them out to safety. Elliot hated when people and animals went into the water because he was secretly afraid of it. He went on telling, warning the horses to stay away, but they just would not listen!
