EFF SNUBS WHITE-LED PARTY ALLIANCE

South Africa’s hopes of forming a coalition government are getting slimmer by the day.
The pan-African Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party has ruled out working with white-led rivals Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front plus (FF+). Hardly surprising, as they clash with many of the EFF’s Black empowerment policies designed to address the injustices of the apartheid regime.

It means President Cyril Ramaphosa is up against the clock, as he struggles to form a National Unity Government before the June 14th deadline. Even within his own African National Congress party, there are those who’re against partnering with the DA. Unless there’s a breakthrough, it could mean another general election on the horizon.

South Africa was plunged into political chaos after the ANC failed to win an outright majority in last month’s ballot. With just 40 per cent of the vote, it left Ramaphosa with little choice but to reach out to rivals. In addition to the EFF and DA, he’s held discussions with the Inkhata Freedom Party (IFP) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA). However, it’s clear some are at opposite ends of the political spectrum and deal-making between them looks almost impossible.
