The Eider, scientifically known as Somateria mollissima, is a large sea duck found in the northern regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. These birds are well-adapted to harsh Arctic environments and spend most of their time in coastal waters or on nearby islands. One of the most striking features of the Eider is the female's elaborate nest, which is lined with her own downy feathers plucked from her breast. This incredibly soft and insulating down has been harvested for centuries, making Eider down one of the warmest natural insulators known to man. Eiders are fairly chunky birds, with the males sporting a distinctive black-and-white plumage, while the females are more subdued in shades of brown. Despite their bulky appearance, they are strong fliers and excellent swimmers, diving for molluscs, crustaceans, and aquatic plants.
