John - Chapter 20 Summary:

John chapter 20 recounts the resurrection of Jesus and His appearances to His disciples. Early on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb and informs Peter and John, who rush to see for themselves. Inside the tomb, they find the linen wrappings but no body. Mary remains at the tomb weeping and encounters two angels and then Jesus Himself, whom she initially does not recognize. Jesus speaks to her, revealing His identity, and instructs her to tell the disciples that He is ascending to the Father. Later that evening, Jesus appears to the disciples, showing them His wounds and granting them peace, along with the Holy Spirit. Thomas, who was absent, doubts their account until Jesus appears again and invites Thomas to touch His wounds, leading Thomas to proclaim Jesus as "My Lord and my God." The chapter concludes with John stating the purpose of his Gospel: that readers may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing, they may have life in His name.
