There is such a deep and powerful connection a teacher can build with their students. A figure that isn’t really a friend, but a parent either, teachers guide their pupils through the few years the spend with them, showing them the virtues they should own in life. So when a good and loving teacher leaves an educational institution, they also leave their pupils behind. Naturally, they would like to show their favorite teacher how much they mean to them.

These students had that exact same thought when their favorite Spanish teacher was leaving the school, so they showed him just how much attention they were paying to what he was talking all those years and wanted to do something special, just for him.

Joe Lara spent his birthday as his last day on the job as a Spanish teacher for 10 years at the Valley Christian High School in Chandler, Arizona, on April 25. He may not have been emotionally prepared for the say, but he definitely was not expecting the sweet surprise that three of his students cooked up for him.

Sailor Coutermarsh and two of her peers saved up some of their own money to buy Señor Lara his dream shoes for his birthday. She even posted a video of the surprise on Twitter. “Since our teacher is leaving and today is his birthday we got him his dream shoes he talks about everyday,” she said in her Tweet.

Señor Lara rips up the wrapping paper to discover a box with a logo he recognizes all to well. They got his Air Jordans as a parting birthday gift! “No way,” he exclaims, before peeling back the tissue paper to reveal the sneakers. The Jordan brand even retweeted the video, saying: “Thank you for your dedication to the next generation of flight, Mr. Lara. We’re honored to be a part of your classroom.”
