Zx Spectrum 2B Black Issue 2 Fancy 8-bit Retro Computer Refurbished Retro Gaming
The ZX Spectrum 2B Black Issue 2 Fancy is a cherished artifact from the golden era of home computing and retro gaming. Released in the late 1980s, this 8-bit computer represents one of the final iterations of the iconic ZX Spectrum series. Known for its enhanced features, sleek design, and robust performance, the ZX Spectrum 2B stands out as a beloved piece of technology that continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors. Refurbished to meet modern standards while preserving its vintage charm, the ZX Spectrum 2B Black Issue 2 Fancy is a must-have for any serious retro gamer or computer history aficionado.

The Evolution of the ZX Spectrum

The ZX Spectrum series, originally developed by Sinclair Research and later taken over by Amstrad, played a crucial role in popularizing home computing across the UK and beyond. The ZX Spectrum 2B, an evolution of the ZX Spectrum 128K, was introduced by Amstrad as part of their efforts to refine and improve the existing models. Following Amstrad's acquisition of Sinclair Research in 1986, the company aimed to make the ZX Spectrum line more user-friendly and marketable to a broader audience, leading to the creation of models like the ZX Spectrum 2B.

The ZX Spectrum 2B was released in the late 1980s and was known for its distinctive black design, which gave it a more modern and sophisticated look compared to its predecessors. The Issue 2 variant of the ZX Spectrum 2B featured several improvements over earlier models, making it one of the most sought-after versions among collectors today.

Design and Features

The ZX Spectrum 2B Black Issue 2 Fancy is easily recognizable due to its elegant black casing, which contrasts with the grey design of the earlier ZX Spectrum 2 models. This aesthetic change was more than just cosmetic; it represented Amstrad's commitment to modernizing the ZX Spectrum line while retaining the functionality that made it so popular.

One of the key features of the ZX Spectrum 2B was its integrated cassette deck, a hallmark of the ZX Spectrum 2 series. This built-in tape recorder allowed users to load games and software directly, eliminating the need for an external cassette player. The full-size keyboard, introduced with the ZX Spectrum 2, was retained in the 2B model, providing a more comfortable and responsive typing experience for users.

The ZX Spectrum 2B was powered by the Z80A CPU running at 3.5 MHz and featured 128KB of RAM, a significant upgrade from the original 48KB model. This memory expansion allowed for more complex and graphically rich games to be developed, contributing to the ZX Spectrum's extensive library of titles. The 2B model also boasted improved sound capabilities, thanks to the AY-3-8912 sound chip, which provided superior audio quality for games and other applications.

Video output was another area where the ZX Spectrum 2B excelled. The machine offered both RGB and composite video output options, allowing users to connect the computer to a variety of display devices. This versatility made the ZX Spectrum 2B a popular choice for gamers who wanted to experience their favorite titles on larger screens or with better picture quality.

Many hours of soldering, trying & testing and modifying to improve to get the best possible outcome. Still thinking of trying the AD 722 module instead of Tea 2000. I tried the 1uH +82 uF to get 4.43Mhz (variable cap and inductance) it removed the ghosting but I was not satisfied with the quality of fonts that became blurry.
