Purpose Attracts More Than Pay Alone

I remember one time, Cindy and I are having a conversation with an owner of a company and he said, “You know what, Wes, I feel like most of the folks on our team right now would probably take a job with a competitor for 25 cent more an hour.” And that hurt, it hurts my heart, right! Because we’re talking about that’s ten dollars more a week. Somebody would leave you over ten dollars a week? And let’s stretch it… Picture it for a dollar more an hour, that’s sounds like a decent amount, right? It’s forty bucks a week; I mean we’re talking about if they forecast snow next weekend, that’s milk, bread, and eggs… That’s not a big deal. The economy is where it is, what I wanna challenge you to think about is how can we tie in and make sure that they stay because we’ve found their passion, right? People risk their lives for low pay and low money. Alex (in the room) worked for UPS at 20 years old, he was going to college, and he realized he didn’t have purpose in what he was doing. He joined the United States Air Force, that wasn’t about the money. It was about the purpose!
