SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES DROPPED a full-length trailer for Kinds of Kindness Wednesday, and as is to be expected from a Yorgos Lanthimos project at this point, the film looks funny, unsettling, and above all else, strange.
Soundtracked to the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” much like the teaser from earlier this year, the new clip doesn’t give much away for what the movie’s actually about, but it does set the table for the uncomfortable vibes that Lanthimos will likely serve up in his “triptych fable.”
The film will have three distinct storylines: A man without a choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman alarmed that his wife, who was missing-at-sea, has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
“Open your eyes, and look clearly at what’s going on around you, we might all be in danger,” Plemons’ character mumbles to Willem Dafoe early in the trailer. At another point, he confides how his partner “asked me to fuck her in my uniform, and then hit me hard.”
“We didn’t, obviously, fuck,” he adds.
Elsewhere, people are fainting, a body is getting dragged, and Emma Stone is doing a strange dance in a parking lot in front of her car. The final shot is a group of dogs taking a joyride with one of them behind the wheel.
Kinds of Kindness marks Lanthimos’ third consecutive film starring Stone, following The Favourite and Poor Things. She was nominated for Academy Awards for her performances in both films, winning Best Actress for the latter. Along with Stone, Plemons and Dafoe, Kinds Of Kindness’ cast includes Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer.

In Rolling Stone’s review of the film following its Cannes premiere, critic David Fear called Kinds of Kindness “just as head-scratching, humiliation-friendly and downright unsettling as those early reputation-establishing works. Maybe moreso.”
The movie hits theaters on June 21.

The latest film from Yorgos Lanthimos takes a different visual direction, set in the present day with plenty of oddities.
Early positive reception and awards buzz suggest that Kinds of Kindness is on track to be a hit with audiences.
The final trailer has been revealed for Kinds of Kindness. Kinds of Kindness is the latest film from Yorgos Lanthimos, directly following up his acclaimed 2023 film Poor Things. The movie is a triptych story that pieces together the narratives of three very different groups of characters in intertwined storylines. It features a leading cast including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer.
Kinds of Kindness is set for release on June 21, 2024.
Now, Searchlight has released the final trailer for Kinds of Kindness. It begins with Stone’s character driving down a road in a sports car announcing, “This is it.” The scene then transitions to a hospital, where a mysterious procedure appears to be taking place. In another storyline, Dafoe and Chau’s characters interact.
Other moments involve a black-and-white dinner table sequence, and a stilted relationship between Plemons and Stone. After a series of rapid-fire shots, the final confounding element of the trailer involves a black-and-white sequence of dogs driving.
How Will Kinds Of Kindness Compare to Past Lanthimos Films?
Kinds Of Kindness Veers Away From His Most Recent Efforts
As in the case with the previous Kinds of Kindness trailer, this clip gives audiences both a lot and a little at the same time. In under two minutes, the trailer inundates viewers with intriguing images and characters, from strange medical facilities to Chau licking a human torso, from start to finish. At the same time, very little is revealed by way of a coherent plot for Kinds of Kindness. This is likely by design, as Lanthimos may be hesitant to reveal the wacky world to be explored in his experimental film.
Though similarly off-the-wall, Kinds of Kindness already looks starkly different from Lanthimos’ last two feature films, Poor Things and The Favourite. Those movies, even if Poor Things included fantastical elements, were both period pieces, while Kinds of Kindness appears to be set in the present day. This setting gives a far different visual feel to the 2024 Lanthimos film, stepping outside of the more stylized space in which he had been operating. Lanthimos’ previous present day film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, still included numerous oddities, so Kinds of Kindness likely will as well.

Yorgos Lanthimos has made several successful movies over the years, though his distinct style means that some were received better than others.
Though it has not yet been released widely, the reception to Kinds of Kindness is so far positive. At the time of writing, it holds an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes among 47 critics. It also won an award at Cannes for best actor for Plemons, though it lost the Palme d’Or to Sean Baker’s Anora. With both this early response and the Kinds of Kindness trailer, the Lanthimos film is on a good track.

Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have gotten their butts up and worked, even though these days it seems like nobody wants to. The actor-director duo are back with their second movie in a year, fresh off four Oscar wins for Poor Things, including a Lead Actress award for Stone. Previously, the two collaborated on Bleat (2022) and The Favourite (2019); the newest one, Kinds of Kindness, is a “triptych fable,” the official summary reads, that follows three characters: a man “without choice” attempting to gain control of his life, a policeman reuniting with his wife who was missing at sea, and a woman searching for someone with a special spiritual ability. Below, find all kinds of Kinds of Kindness info, including how the cast reacted to the script, what happens in the trailer, and when it’s coming out.
Will it be normal?
Most likely not. Lanthimos co-wrote Kinds of Kindness with Efthimis Filippou (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), and all signs suggest that they created an unhinged — or at the very least, incredibly confusing — script. Several cast members shared their initial reactions in a May 6 Vanity Fair piece: “I did not understand what I read — complete disclosure, I did not understand the script,” Hong Chau recalled. Mamoudou Athie also admitted to not understanding it, while Jesse Plemons summed his response up as, “Oh my God. What?” He added that he felt like he needed to read the “abstract and surreal” project’s script “30 more times.”
The film is reportedly broken into three parts, respectively titled “The Death of R.M.F.,” “R.M.F. Is Flying,” and “R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich.” Most of the cast play multiple characters across the triptych. “Casting the same few actors in different roles would provide a sense of continuity and unity between the three different stories,” Lanthimos explained to Vanity Fair. “At the same time, I didn’t want the actors to change that much from one role to the next, as that felt like a show-off. We wanted to make slight alterations in the look, energy, and pace of each actor.”
What happens in the trailer?
Stone drives a car and says “This is it.” Hunter Schafer gets asked to do something (in a morgue). Chau cries. Margaret Qualley is in unflattering black and white. Plemons tells Willem Dafoe he loves him and refuses to be fed steak by Stone. Plemons tells Chau about how Stone asked him to fuck her in his uniform. Joe Alwyn and Athie are there. Overall: The plot of this movie is not particularly legible, but it sure does look like it was made by a freak (compliment!).
Who’s in the cast?
Emma Stone, a permanent Lanthimos fave, stars as Rita. Jesse Plemons, who just won Best Actor at Cannes for the film, plays Robert. The all-star cast further includes Hunter Schafer, Willem Dafoe, Hong Chau, Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, and Mamoudou Athie. If we wanted to be messy, we could point out how awkward this press tour will be for Taylor Swift. We will instead refrain.
When is Kinds of Kindness coming out?
It will have its world premiere at Cannes in May. For those of us who cannes’nt make it to the film festival, Kinds of Kindness is due to arrive in theaters on June 21.
