Is losing our microbiome’s beneficial bacteria and fungal species driving chronic disease—including heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s disease? If so, what can be done to restore the health of the body’s microbiome?

Loss of many beneficial microbial species in the colon has led to an overpopulation of fecal microbes in the small intestine, says Dr. William Davis, highlighting the first step in how gut health decline can lead to brain disease, like Alzheimer’s.

When the fecal microbes die, their toxic compounds enter the bloodstream and can make their way to the brain to cause inflammation, which can damage parts of the brain.

Dr. Davis had practiced cardiology for 25 years when he sharply shifted his focus to the body’s microbiome. This was triggered by the dramatic improvements he saw in patients simply through adjusting their diets, particularly through cutting wheat and grains.

“Foods made of wheat flour raise blood sugar higher than nearly all other foods,” says Dr. Davis.

“Not only that, but wheat and other grains throw our microbiome out of balance and can wreak havoc on so many other bodily functions,” he adds.

For this “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon” live webinar, Dr. Davis shares insights from his book, “Super Gut,” on “reprogramming the microbiome” to restore health.

Indigenous hunter-gatherer populations in New Guinea, Kenya, and other parts of Central Africa have certain protective gut microbes that we’ve lost, says Dr. Davis.

“Their health includes virtually no stomach ulcers, acid reflux, hemorrhoids ... [and other] diseases of civilization,” he adds.

How can lost beneficial bacteria be restored, and what results do we see across weight loss, mood, libido, bone density, and other aspects of health when this is done?
